The Geneva Bible came out of the Reformation struggle to put Scripture into the hands of ordinary people.

PETER'S GOSPEL THROUGH HIS “SON”
Who was John Mark?
Acts 12:12 — Geneva 1599
“And as he considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together, and prayed.”
Peter escapes prison and goes directly to Mark's mother's house.
Mark was there at the beginning.
Acts 12:25 — Barnabas and Saul take Mark with them.
Acts 13:5 — Mark serves them.
Acts 13:13 — Mark leaves and returns to Jerusalem.
Acts 15:36–40 — Paul refuses to take Mark again; Barnabas takes him.
Colossians 4:10 — Mark is Barnabas's relative.
Philemon 24 — Paul calls Mark a fellow worker.
1 Peter 5:13 — Geneva 1599
“The Church that is at Babylon elected together with you, saluteth you, and Marcus my son.”
Mark is Peter's “son.”

When you're reading Mark, you're reading Mark's pen—but behind that pen stands Peter's eyewitness preaching.
PREACHING CUE — Peter:
Fisherman. Businessman. Rough. Bold. Ready for a fight. A man waiting for God's Messiah.
It's an action Gospel about a conquering King.

Mark 1:1 — Geneva 1599
“The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”
Don't flatten Gospel into merely “good news.”
Euangelion — εὐαγγέλιον
It is good news—an announcement of victory.

Two kingdoms go to war. One king wins. A messenger/rider carries the announcement of victory.
The message is:
THE KING HAS WON.
READ VERSES Mark 1: 1-15
Heaven opens.
The Spirit descends.
The Father speaks.
Jesus confronts Satan.
Angels minister to Him.
The Kingdom is announced.
Men are commanded to follow.
JESUS IS KING.
But what kind of King is He?

THE PROMISED SERVANT
Messiah, Son of Joseph — the suffering Messiah.
Mark immediately reaches backward to Isaiah.
Mark 1:3 — Geneva 1599
“The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness is, Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make his paths straight.”
Isaiah 40:3 — Geneva 1599
“A voice crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make straight in the desert a path for our God.”
Isaiah's Servant runs through Mark:
Mark 8:31 — He must suffer and be rejected.
Mark 9:31 — He will be delivered into men's hands and killed.
Mark 10:33–34 — He will be mocked, scourged, spit upon and killed.
Mark 14–15 — The Servant actually suffers.
And then Mark tells us why:

“For even the Son of man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life for the ransom of many.”

Waiting for Dad's anger.

I could outrun my father's rhetoric.
I couldn't outrun his grace.

The King who came looking for sinners.
The King who suffered for His people.

Malachi 3:1 — Geneva 1599
“Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord whom ye seek, shall speedily come to his Temple: even the messenger of the covenant whom ye desire: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.”
Then Mark announces:
Mark 1:7 — Geneva 1599
“There cometh one stronger than I after me, whose shoes latchet I am not worthy to stoop down, and unloose.”
THE KING HAS ARRIVED.
Mark 1:13 — He defeats SATAN., Mark 5:41–42 — He commands DEATH., Mark 16:6 — He defeats THE GRAVE., Malachi 3:1–2 — The LORD COMES to judge and conquer.
Mark 1:17 — Geneva 1599
“Follow me, and I will make you to be fishers of men.”
Eventually Jesus defeats the grave itself.
This is Mashiach ben David.
The warrior King.
The conquering King.
The King whose Kingdom will have no end.

“You never loved your friends, my friends,
As I shall love my foes.”
Battle / just-war illustration.
Angry Warriors — Vietnam / warriors / enemies.
There is a difference between hating your enemy and being willing to fight evil.
Jesus loves His enemies.
Jesus dies for His enemies.
But Jesus is also the righteous Judge who ultimately destroys evil.

“For the word of God is lively, and mighty in operation, and sharper than any two edged sword…”

The Word got into my dad.
He put the Word into me.
Somehow the Word got into my son.
Jesus is the warrior King.
And if my King has conquered death, hell and the grave—

THE PROMISED HUSBAND
Hosea presents another picture of the coming relationship between God and His people.
Hosea 2:16 — Geneva 1599
“And at that day, saith the Lord, thou shalt call me Ishi, and shalt call me no more Baali.”
אִישִׁי — ISHI
“My husband.”
Hosea 2:19–20 — Geneva 1599
“And I will marry thee unto me forever: yea, I will marry thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in mercy and in compassion. I will even marry thee unto me in faithfulness, and thou shalt know the Lord.”
This is not merely a King coming for subjects.
THE BRIDEGROOM IS COMING FOR HIS BRIDE.
John understands his role:
John 3:29 — Geneva 1599
“He that hath the bride, is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice…”
John is the friend of the Bridegroom.
He's preparing the people for the Husband who is coming.
Then Jesus steps into the Jordan.
Mark 1:10–11 — Geneva 1599
“And as soon as he was come out of the water, John saw the heavens cloven in twain, and the holy Ghost descending upon him like a dove. Then there was a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
WHY IS JESUS BAPTIZED?
He doesn't need cleansing.
He has no sin.
WEDDING ILLUSTRATION:
Three movements:
Baptism — preparation.
Bread and wine — covenant/price.
Bridegroom returns — wedding celebration.
Jesus enters the water as the Bridegroom beginning His mission.
The Father declares:
“THOU ART MY BELOVED SON.”
“I'm proud of you.”
Now the Father speaks over His Son:
“I am well pleased.”
Go build Your family.
Paul later describes Christ's love for that bride:
Ephesians 5:25–27 — Geneva 1599
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the Church, and gave himself for it, that he might sanctify it, and cleanse it by the washing of water through the word, that he might make it unto himself a glorious Church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing: but that it should be holy and without blame.”
That's HaMashiach Ishi.
The Husband looks at His bride:
No spot.
No wrinkle.
Holy.
Without blame.
Not because she made herself worthy.
Because He gave Himself for her.
HOW DOES THAT CHANGE ME?
I am loved.
DO YOU KNOW THIS KING?
Not merely:
Do you know about Jesus?
DO YOU KNOW THE THREE KINGS?
Mashiach ben Yosef.
The King who suffered for me.
I AM FORGIVEN.
Mashiach ben David.
The King who conquered for me.
I AM NOT AFRAID.
HaMashiach Ishi.
The Husband who gave Himself for His bride.
I AM LOVED.
The Conquering King.
The Suffering Servant.
The Faithful Husband.
THREE PROMISES.
ONE MESSIAH.
YAHSHUA HAMASHIACH.
NO KING BUT CHRIST.
