Why did Abram need to listen to God?
What is one way we can please God?
Why is it important that we obey God?
A long time ago, there was a man named Abram who lived in a place called Haran. When Abram was 75 years old, God spoke to him and told him something very big.
God said, “Go from your land and from your family to another land that I will show you.” God also made Abram a promise. He promised to bless him, make him into a great nation, and bless the whole world through him.
Abram did not know where he was going. He didn’t know how long the journey would take. He didn’t know how God would keep His promise. But Abram listened to God and obeyed. He packed up everything, took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, and followed God to the land of Canaan.
Lesson: Abram needed to listen to God because God knew the way, even when Abram didn’t.
When Abram arrived, God appeared to him again and promised that his descendants would one day receive the land. Abram built an altar and worshiped God.
But Abram and Sarai were very old and still had no children. God promised that Abram would become a great nation, but Abram couldn’t understand how that could ever happen.
Years later, God told Abram to look at the stars in the sky. God promised that Abram would have as many children as the stars. God even changed Abram’s name to Abraham, which means “father of many nations,” and Sarai’s name to Sarah.
Lesson: One way we please God is by trusting Him, even when His promises seem impossible.
After many years, God did exactly what He promised. Abraham and Sarah had a son named Isaac. From Isaac came many children, and from them came many more—until Abraham’s family became as numerous as the stars in the sky.
God kept every promise He made.
Lesson: It is important to obey God because God is faithful, and His plans are always good.
Just like Abraham, God wants us to:
Listen when He speaks
Trust Him when we don’t understand
Obey even when it feels hard or scary
When we obey God, we show Him that we love Him and believe that His way is best.
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.”
Hebrews 11:8
Faith means listening to God, trusting His promises, and obeying Him—because God always keeps His word.
